Industrial Plug vs Socket vs Connector vs Inlet: How to Say Exactly What You Need

Every week, someone sends us an inquiry that reads: "I need an industrial socket." That single word is a good starting point, but it is rarely enough to start production. In the IEC 60309 world, "socket" can mean a wall-mounted outlet, a panel-mounted outlet, or a female cable connector — three different products with different housings, fixings and cable entries. Naming the product correctly is the fastest way to get the right part. This guide explains the five product types in the IEC 60309 system and how to describe your requirement so a manufacturer can quote it correctly the first time.

Why the same word means different products

In a household setting, "plug" and "socket" are everyday words with obvious meanings. Industrial power connection is different: products are defined by where they live (on a cable, on a wall, or on a machine) and by what they connect to. Two parts can look similar yet mount completely differently, and the same term — especially "socket" — is used loosely across markets and industries.

The IEC 60309 standard solves the compatibility side of the problem: pin arrangement, earth position and voltage colour coding are fixed, so a plug from one manufacturer mates with a socket from another. But the standard does not solve the naming side. That part is up to the buyer and the supplier to get right in the inquiry.

The five product types in the IEC 60309 system

On the cable

1. Plug

A plug is the male end of a cable — it carries the pins and is terminated onto the cable conductor. The plug is the "live end" you carry in your hand and insert into a socket. It is what makes a generator, machine or distribution box energised when connected.

2. Connector (cable connector)

A connector is the female end of a cable — it carries the contact sleeves and is also terminated onto a cable. You use it to extend a cable, or to receive the plug of another cable. If a supplier says "cable socket," they usually mean this product: a female connector that sits on a cable, not on a wall.

3. Wall-mounted socket

A wall-mounted socket is a fixed female outlet installed on a wall or on the face of a distribution box. It has a fixing frame and screw holes for permanent mounting, and it accepts the plug of a cable. This is the classic "socket" people picture when they think of site power.

On the panel

4. Panel-mounted socket

A panel-mounted socket is a fixed female outlet installed into a machine panel, control cabinet or equipment enclosure. It differs from a wall socket mainly in the mounting method and housing design — it is recessed into or fixed onto the panel of the equipment itself, so the connection point sits flush with the machine.

5. Appliance inlet

An appliance inlet is a male inlet fixed on equipment or machinery. It is the counterpart of a cable connector: the equipment carries the inlet, and a cable fitted with a female connector plugs into it. This is how machines receive their supply through a detachable cable rather than a hard-wired connection.

A quick logic: male/female × cable/fixed

The fastest way to keep the five products straight is to ask two questions: does it have pins or sleeves, and does it live on a cable or on a fixed surface?

Practical rule of thumb: the male part is almost always the "supply" end (a plug at the end of a cable, or an inlet on a machine). The female part is almost always the "receive" end (a connector on a cable, or a socket on a wall, panel or box). When you can answer which side is male and where it is mounted, you have essentially described the product.

How to describe your requirement so it gets quoted right

The clearest inquiry states the product type first, then the electrical and mechanical parameters. A good template:

  1. Product type — plug, connector, wall-mounted socket, panel-mounted socket, or appliance inlet
  2. Current — 16 A, 32 A, 63 A, 125 A, or high-current ratings above 125 A
  3. Voltage and phase — 230 V single-phase, 400 V three-phase, etc.
  4. Poles — 2P+E, 3P+E, 3P+N+E
  5. IP rating — IP44 or IP67
  6. Cable size and outer diameter — especially important for plugs and connectors
  7. Application — generator, machine, distribution box, EV charging, marine, etc.

If you are not sure which type you need, send a photo or a drawing. A picture of the existing socket or a sketch of the mounting position removes all guesswork — it tells the engineer in one glance whether the part is on a cable, on a wall, or on a machine. In our experience, an inquiry with one photo gets a correct recommendation faster than three rounds of text clarification.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Using "socket" for everything. It may mean a wall socket, a panel socket, or a cable connector — say which one.
  2. Forgetting male vs female. A plug and a connector are both on cables, but only a plug has pins and fits into a socket.
  3. Ordering a "plug" when you need an inlet. If the part must be fixed on the machine, it is usually an appliance inlet, not a cable plug.
  4. Omitting the mounting position. Wall versus panel changes the fixing and housing — include where it will be installed.
  5. Skipping the parameters. "Industrial socket" plus no current, voltage or poles still leaves the supplier guessing.
